Workshop III    23-24 May 2024

Oslo

The third workshop took place in Oslo on 23-24 May 2024. Here we reflected on the development of the project so far and provided further feedback on drafts using the NAJS Conference format: Each participant had submitted a draft to be read by all other participants, and then received feedback from two dedicated discussants, as well as the group at large.

We were also extremely grateful to have two experts on emotions in international relations – Naomi Head and Todd H. Hall – join us for this workshop, where they provided invaluable comments and feedback.

Delegation trip to Ukraine

For Project PUBLISH: Children’s Books in the Russia-Ukraine War

In early April, a joint Danish-Ukrainian team of researchers kicked off a new research project, PUBLISH: Children’s Books in the Russia-Ukraine War, with a trip to Ukraine, where they visited both Kyiv and Lviv to meet with Ukranian scholars, establish networks and collect research materials.

Our Department of Global Studies was represented by Birgitte Beck Pristed and Nadiia Pavlyk, who conducted in-depth interviews with directors of some of the leading Ukrainian children’s book publishers, and brought some 30 children’s books about the war back with them.

The project came about as a result of Birgitte and Nadiia meeting and discussing their research at the Ukrainian Scholars Days, a biannual event organised by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and The Danish Young Academy. The two presented their project there last month to great interest and acclaim (in Danish).

Japan Studies scholars present their research in San Francisco

at ISA 2024 Annual Convention

Raymond Yamamoto and Jacob Hedegaard from our Japan Studies program attended the International Studies Association 2024 Annual Convention in San Francisco in early April, where they presented the preliminary results of their research in connection with the project “Coercive and Emotional Diplomacy in East Asia: Japanese Responses” together with fellow project participants Giulio Pugliese (Oxford University) and Carmina Yu Untalan (Leiden University).

Presenting our research at one of the world’s biggest conventions for international relations scholars was a fantastic opportunity not only to promote the research being done here at the department, but also to receive invaluable feedback from fellow researchers, including Simon Koschut (Zeppelin University), one of the foremost experts on emotions in international relations, who had graciously agreed to serve as discussant.

We would like to thank Simon as well as Kristin Haugevik (Norwegian Institute of International Affairs), who chaired the discussions.

60 Years after the Military Coup

A Critical Remembering of Military Rule in Brazil

The event “60 Years after the Military Coup: A Critical Remembering of Military Rule in Brazil,” organized on 14 March by our Brazilian Studies program, provided an opportunity for collective reflection on Brazil’s military dictatorship.

The contemporary importance of memory was explored through Rebecca Atencio’s (Tulane University) analysis. Paulo Santos Lopes and Rildete Alves Rodrigues shared their life stories as Brazilian citizens, offering insights into the brutality of the dictatorship and their experiences of exile in Denmark.

The event concluded with a performance by Laura Leite Drachmann, guiding the audience through the melodies of significant Brazilian songs.
