Internship in Ceará

By Amalie Berthelsen

Greetings from Ceará, Brazil!

My name is Amalie and I am currently a Master’s student at the programme Global Area Studies – with a profile in Brazilian Studies.

This fall I am doing an internship with the Danish-Brazilian NGO “Victory Association”, which is based in the countryside near Fortaleza working with children and women in the local community.

Amalie Internship

During October we conducted a project called Breath of Life Brazil together with a group of Danish artists and Brazilian partners, which ended out in an exhibition in a cultural center in Fortaleza.

It has consisted of creative workshops with the cearenses (people living in Ceará) – children, women. It also involved an institute working with mental health, a cultural center and an organization working with people on the streets. The focus in the workshops has been hopes and dreams, where the participants have had the chance to express their hopes and dreams through the arts and share a part of their story.

It has resulted in art full of stories, dreams and hopes which altogether made up the exhibition. So many stories from cearenses in different life situations.

It has been a very special time with a lot of insights, life stories and being the whisper in someone’s ear translating both language and culture, which has put my skill set from university into play.

Abraços from Fortaleza,
Amalie

Internship at Erhverv Aarhus/ International Community

After a canceled internship and a break due to corona, I finally got the chance to do an internship right here in the middle of Aarhus. My journey as an intern at Erhverv Aarhus/International Community began in August 2022 and wrapped up on January 2023. I applied for the position because of the organization’s focus on internationals in Aarhus (both on a professional and personal level), which seemed like a good fit for the focus of GLAS.

While the name of my position was ‘Communication and SoMe intern’, due to the structure of the organization, there was so much variety and teamwork across the different areas. I actually got to do so much more: Event-coordination, media production, website-building, etc. I was challenged to try out new things, and my responsibility grew slowly with every passing month.

The experience

I think one of the most exciting – and frightening – experiences was the launch of my first ‘solo event’, which I was tasked to coordinate. Its purpose was to build a bridge between the Danish association-life and internationals in Aarhus through a fun evening event, where clubs- and associations would come pitch their activities to the audience.

Did it go as planned? Absolutely not! But I grew from the experience and brought it with me to the next event I had to coordinate, where the positive response from the attendees was amazing. In general, I think that my internship gave me an opportunity to see how the work done from behind a desk, actually has an influence on people in real life. In effect, I  brought the practicality of my studies to the table.

It also gave me the opportunity to see Denmark – and Aarhus especially – from a completely different view. It made me more aware of both the political, cultural, and social aspects that internationals have to navigate when relocating to this city.

While my internship didn’t have a direct link to Japan or Japanese culture, it was an enlightening and challenging experience that brought me the opportunity to put my knowledge in perspective on top of gaining hands-on experience.

Internship At The Embassy Of Denmark In Tokyo

During my third semester of GLAS, I had the opportunity to work as a part of the Public Diplomacy and Communications team during my internship at the Embassy of Denmark in Tokyo. This role allowed me to get hands-on experience with a variety of tasks related to communication and outreach.

One of the most exciting aspects of the internship was managing the embassy’s social media accounts. This involved creating and scheduling posts, as well as monitoring engagement and responding to comments and messages. I also had the chance to design and update the embassy’s website, which allowed me to improve my web design skills.

In addition to digital communication, I was also involved in event planning. I helped to organize various events, including a street festival and a small concert featuring Danish musicians. It was rewarding to see these events come to life and to be a part of the team that made them happen.

Another aspect of my internship was responding to external inquiries. This included answering questions from the public about Denmark, as well as providing information to journalists and other organizations. I also conducted research and developed ideas for future communication and outreach initiatives.

Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to work on various writing tasks and presentations. This allowed me to improve my communication skills and gain experience with different formats and styles of writing.

Overall, the internship was an incredibly valuable experience. Not only did I gain practical skills in communication and outreach, but I also had the opportunity to experience Japanese culture and work in the country that I have studied for many years.

Internship in Germany

I got an internship in Cologne, Germany, with the IT software company Silexica GmbH. Here I worked as a core member of the marketing department, responsible for the Japanese and English online communication channels.

In addition, I also played an active role in the business plans that affected the Japanese office. Among other things, I was helped to communicate and coordinate business plans between HQ in Germany and the office in Shin-Yokohama, which I also had the opportunity to visit later in the course.

During my course, I have gained experience in online marketing, strategy development, event management, communication with internal and external stakeholders, sales operations, etc. The internship has given me a deeper understanding of the situations that can arise in a multicultural, international company.

It has made a difference for me subsequently, as I had to find a full-time job after university.

I also had the opportunity to experience German culture and feel how a startup company motivates its employees through monthly team events and shared lunches with food from different cultures. While I was an intern, the office consisted of employees from approx. twenty-four countries, so there were good opportunities to get an insight into other cultures and languages while in the office.

My advice would be that you should not be afraid to think of alternative plans in terms of location and seize the opportunities that arise!

The internship is to gain an insight into a new world and create a new framework with the theoretical tools that we have with us from the study.
