Aarhus University hosts NAJS Conference 2024

Nordic Association for the Study of Contemporary Japanese Society

Last month, our Japan Studies Program organized the 18th NAJS Conference here in Aarhus.

The conference featured a total of 29 papers on such diverse topics as architecture, drug smuggling, international relations, gender, economics and more. We had participants coming in from all over Europe, but also from as far away as Japan and Indonesia.

Unlike most academic conferences, the NAJS format emphasizes discussion rather than presentation, so our participants were able to receive a great deal of feedback on their papers.

We were also extremely fortunate to have to keynote speeches by renowned scholars. On day 1, Akio Takahara gave a talk on how Japan-China relations and how Japan is coping with the rise of China (available on YouTube). On day 2, Manami Hori gave a talk on Japan’s healthcare policies in dealing with its super-aging society.

The conference marked the 20th anniversary of the founding of NAJS. We are extremely grateful to The Toshiba International Foundation and The Scandinavia-Japan Sasakawa Foundation for their generous support.

Sonia Contera

On November 15th, we were delighted to host a lecture by Sonia Contera, Professor of Biological Physics at the University of Oxford, Department of Physics. The lecture was titled ‘Reality, Technology and Power: the deep relationship of modern Japan with Physics and physicists’.

Contera presented the complex social dynamics of the world relating to physics, showcasing how Japan has shaped its modern identity, sense of pride and even destiny around its abilities within physics, in turn, transforming the field itself. This lecture proved as a great example as to how ‘hard’ sciences and literature/arts are so intertwined in understanding the past and present of the world around us.

We were delighted to host her, and look forward to future academic exchange.

The Power of Memes

In Ukrainian Online Resistance

On October 24, we welcomed Tine Munk, a Senior Lecturer in the Criminology and Criminal Justice Department at Nottingham Trent University.

She delivered a compelling presentation called “Click, Share, Resist: The Power of Memes in the Ukrainian Online Resistance.” Drawing from her recent book, “Memetic War: Online Resistance in Ukraine,” Munk discussed the significance of memes as powerful tools for countering propaganda and misinformation in the digital age.

She demonstrated how social media platforms have become battlegrounds for information, where memes play a pivotal role in shaping narratives. Memes simplify complex ideas, making them easily shareable and digestible, reaching a broad audience. In Ukraine, state and non-state actors alike are utilizing memes to battle misinformaiton by challenging false narratives.

We are grateful to have attended such an insightful lecture, and thank Tine Munk for her dedication.
