Aarhus University hosts NAJS Conference 2024

Nordic Association for the Study of Contemporary Japanese Society

Last month, our Japan Studies Program organized the 18th NAJS Conference here in Aarhus.

The conference featured a total of 29 papers on such diverse topics as architecture, drug smuggling, international relations, gender, economics and more. We had participants coming in from all over Europe, but also from as far away as Japan and Indonesia.

Unlike most academic conferences, the NAJS format emphasizes discussion rather than presentation, so our participants were able to receive a great deal of feedback on their papers.

We were also extremely fortunate to have to keynote speeches by renowned scholars. On day 1, Akio Takahara gave a talk on how Japan-China relations and how Japan is coping with the rise of China (available on YouTube). On day 2, Manami Hori gave a talk on Japan’s healthcare policies in dealing with its super-aging society.

The conference marked the 20th anniversary of the founding of NAJS. We are extremely grateful to The Toshiba International Foundation and The Scandinavia-Japan Sasakawa Foundation for their generous support.

Japan Studies scholars present their research in San Francisco

at ISA 2024 Annual Convention

Raymond Yamamoto and Jacob Hedegaard from our Japan Studies program attended the International Studies Association 2024 Annual Convention in San Francisco in early April, where they presented the preliminary results of their research in connection with the project “Coercive and Emotional Diplomacy in East Asia: Japanese Responses” together with fellow project participants Giulio Pugliese (Oxford University) and Carmina Yu Untalan (Leiden University).

Presenting our research at one of the world’s biggest conventions for international relations scholars was a fantastic opportunity not only to promote the research being done here at the department, but also to receive invaluable feedback from fellow researchers, including Simon Koschut (Zeppelin University), one of the foremost experts on emotions in international relations, who had graciously agreed to serve as discussant.

We would like to thank Simon as well as Kristin Haugevik (Norwegian Institute of International Affairs), who chaired the discussions.

Japan Studies Roleplay Exam

2024

Just before the Easter Break, our second-semester students from the Japan Studies program had a somewhat unorthodox oral exam. In what has become an annual tradition, the students performed roleplays that they had written themselves.

There were four groups in total, with genres ranging from horror to fairy tale and topics such as online dating and the Japanese tradition of Setsubun, where people chase away demons by throwing beans at them. The audience of Japan Studies teachers and students, as well as Japanese exchange students, were thoroughly entertained and impressed with the performances.

Thank you to the students for their hard work and great performances!

defends his Ph.D. thesis

On 2 February, Jonathan Nilas Puntervold from our Japan Studies program successfully defended his dissertation – “If the Shoe Fits: Yamada Yoshio and the birth of neotraditionalist linguistics in Japan” – thereby obtaining his Ph.D.

Jonathan took on a journey back to pre-war Japan, where the encounter with Western linguistics spurred a local school teacher to try to restore Japan’s ‘Kokugaku Grammar’, in an attempt to develop a Japanese linguistics.

Last Friday, November 24, we hosted a fascinating book talk by Heather Swanson from the Department of Anthropology here at AU about her new book: “Spawning Modern Fish: Transnational Comparison in the Making of Japanese Salmon”.

Her book delves into how agricultural development and fishery management in northern Japan represent the intricacies of the efforts to make the new Japanese nation-state more legibly “modern”. The reach of these new modes of thinking to places such as the American West and Southern Chile provide comparisons that continually affect the region’s approaches to environmental management and its physical landscapes.

Thank you, Heather, for your enlightening book talk.

'Reality, Technology and Power'

Sonia Contera
Sonia Contera

On November 15th, we were delighted to host a lecture by Sonia Contera, Professor of Biological Physics at the University of Oxford, Department of Physics. The lecture was titled ‘Reality, Technology and Power: the deep relationship of modern Japan with Physics and physicists’.

Contera presented the complex social dynamics of the world relating to physics, showcasing how Japan has shaped its modern identity, sense of pride and even destiny around its abilities within physics, in turn, transforming the field itself. This lecture proved as a great example as to how ‘hard’ sciences and literature/arts are so intertwined in understanding the past and present of the world around us.

We were delighted to host her, and look forward to future academic exchange.

Concert and Workshop

with Traditional Japanese Instruments

On 26 April, the Japan Studies program had the great and rare pleasure of hosting a concert and workshop with the traditional Japanese instruments koto and shakuhachi.

Ayumi Shimonoto, a Yamada School koto performer, was joined by her daughter, Sakura Yuka, who is following in her mother’s footsteps, and Kiku Day, who studied the shakuhachi in Japan for over a decade before returning to Europe, where she has worked tirelessly to promote traditional Japanese music.

In addition to hearing the performers play both traditional and contemporary music, as well as a composition of their own, attendees had the opportunity to try playing both instruments themselves.

Our deepest thanks to all three performers, and to the Toshiba Foundation for their financial support.

Global Drinking Project

kickstarting at Sandbjerg

On 16 -18 March, in the charming setting of Sandbjerg manor in Southern Jutland, members of our department took part in an international workshop. It was organised as part of the Global Drinking Project – an initiative of the Global Studies Department, aimed at exploring global phenomena through the lens of drinking practices and cultures. The workshop has been funded by the Strategic Pool for Research of the School of Culture and Society, and is the first step towards the publication of an edited book.

Led by Chiara Bresciani (anthropologist and part-time lecturer in the MA in International Studies), the workshop brought together academics from various countries such as the UK, Australia, Ecuador, Sweden, Switzerland and Germany. Research covered by the presenters spans across five continents and focuses on the multiple effects of globalisation on different local contexts.

Anemone Platz (Japanese Studies) and Uwe Skoda (India and South Asia Studies) jointly presented their research on the role played by traditional Indian and Japanese rice liquors in the construction of national and regional identities in Asia. Chiara Bresciani and Werner Hertzog (University of Zurich), introduced their comparative work on global corporations and drinking cultures in Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico. Among the themes that emerged from the presentations and discussions have been the role played by global trade, commodification and industrial production in shaping consumer cultures and constructing value, and how beverages contribute to define social capital and colonial and post-colonial nationhood.
