Concert and Workshop

with Traditional Japanese Instruments

On 26 April, the Japan Studies program had the great and rare pleasure of hosting a concert and workshop with the traditional Japanese instruments koto and shakuhachi.

Ayumi Shimonoto, a Yamada School koto performer, was joined by her daughter, Sakura Yuka, who is following in her mother’s footsteps, and Kiku Day, who studied the shakuhachi in Japan for over a decade before returning to Europe, where she has worked tirelessly to promote traditional Japanese music.

In addition to hearing the performers play both traditional and contemporary music, as well as a composition of their own, attendees had the opportunity to try playing both instruments themselves.

Our deepest thanks to all three performers, and to the Toshiba Foundation for their financial support.
