Chinese New Year Celebration

2024: Year of the Dragon

On 9 February, staff from our China Studies program arranged an event with ESN Aarhus and Studenterhus Aarhus to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Students got a chance to experience plenty of Chinese New Year traditions, such as writing red couplets expressing good wishes for the coming year, and making jiaozi (Chinese dumplings) and tangyuan (a sweet dessert made with gloutinous rice flour), both of which are traditional New Year’s foods.

The students also got to practice their Chinese language skills in a fun and informal way, by singing karaoke and watching the Chinese Spring Festival Gala, which is broadcast throughout China every year for Chinese New Year.

This year is the year of the dragon. Unlike in the West, dragons in China are seen as benevolent beings who symbolize good luck and prosperity.

We want to thank our colleagues from China Studies and everyone else who participated for making it a night to remember!

in six European languages

Zhang Chun and Lene Sønderby Bech from our China Studies Program are helping to spearhead a new initiative to elevate the quality of Chinese grammar teaching to European learners by pooling expertise and addressing a demand for accessible digital learning platform and teaching materials.

On Feb. 16-17, Zhang Chun and Lene participated in the inaugural project meeting hosted by Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech, where they discussed and shared valuable experiences related to Chinese grammar teaching with colleagues from other European universities.

Participants included Chinese language teachers and researchers from Palacky University Olomouc in Czech, Humbold-Universitet zu Berlin in Germany, University of Naples L’Orientale in Italy, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland, and our own Aarhus University here in Denmark. The project was made possible by a grant under the Erasmus+KA 220-Cooprative Partnership.

Johnni and Jonas teaching the students about 'guanxi'

BA students Johnni Friis Bovbjerg and Jonas Christensen from our China Studies program participated in ‘Sprogcamp 2024’ in Hjørring this weekend, along with external lecturer Lene Sønderby Bech.

Sprogcamp (language camp) is an event that aims to motivate Danish high school students to study foreign languages and inspire them to pursue careers where languages play a central role. Apart from introducing the students to the Chinese language, Johnni and Jonas also gave them an introduction to Chinese business culture, where ‘guanxi’ (network) is of prime importance.

Sprogcamp is co-organized by Hjørring Gymnasium/STX and HF, and Aarhus University, Aalborg University, University of Southern Denmark. This was the 2nd year in a row that our China Studies program joined this extraordinary event.

Walk and Talk

A China Studies cultural exchange

On the 23rd of September, the Chinese exchange students and the Danish students of Chinese Studies joined us for a walk along the city during a beautiful autumn day.

All China Studies 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students participated and had a nice time chatting and walking together. The event was a great opportunity for our students to talk with native speakers and make new friends. At the same time, we prepared both Danish and Chinese snacks to share with everyone.

Although there was light rain in the morning, luckily the sun was shining all the way through the walk and we even saw a rainbow at the end of the day.

Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival

Last Friday, September 29, China Studies at Aarhus University brightened the evening with a celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival. This cherished Chinese festival, known also as the Moon Festival, symbolizes unity and togetherness under the full moon.

Originating over 3,000 years ago, the Mid-Autumn Festival has deep cultural roots. It honors the moon goddess and signifies a bountiful harvest. At our event, we explored the festival’s history and enjoyed homemade mooncakes, which represent completeness like the full moon itself. We also savored traditional Chinese teas.

Our attendees engaged in crafting beautiful lanterns and learned the intricate skill of paper-cutting.

We extend our gratitude to China Studies for this enrichnig event, blending education and enjoyment. It embodied the festival’s spirit – celebrating Chinese culture, bringing people together in cultural exchange.

As we bid farewell to this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, anticipate more exciting cultural events from China Studies and other programmes at the Department of Global Studies.

China Studies' Naja Morell Hjortshøj

Defends Her Dissertation

On 21 June, Naja Morell Hjortshøj successfully defended her PhD dissertation and obtained her PhD degree.

Naja’s thesis was titled “Educating citizens for a modern socialist country: an anthropological study of innovation and entrepreneurship education in Chinese universities”.

Naja investigated the Chinese state’s focus on promoting innovative thinking and entrepreneurial spirit among the country’s university students, and the various tensions this creates, fx. by trying to foster critical thinking while simultaneously demanding that students should have “correct” opinions and be loyal to the party-state.

After the defense, Naja was joined by family, friends and colleagues for a celebratory reception at Mefisto in the Latin Quarter.

Visit

from Silkeborg Gymnasium

On 24 April 2023, our China Studies program hosted a teacher and 13 first-year pupils from Silkeborg Gymnasium, who are learning Chinese as their second foreign language.

The pupils were given a tour of the campus, where they had a chance to ask lots of questions about life at university in general and as a student at the China Studies program in particular.

They also got to hear about the experiences of our students during their stay abroad in China, where they spent a semester studying Chinese at Peking University and experiencing both the historical and hypermodern China in the city of Beijing. We hope to see many of the visiting pupils among our students in a few years.

Meina Jia Sandal

defends her dissertation

On 23 February, Meina Jia Sandal obtained her PhD degree after successfully defending her dissertation titled “Daigou: Transnational Flows, Relatedness, and the Reproduction of the Chinese Family”.

Meina’s dissertation explored how Chinese women in Denmark had utilized their connections and the knowledge and social capital they had acquired as mothers to start successful businesses buying milk powder in Denmark and selling it to consumers in China – a phenomenon known as “daigou”, meaning “to buy on behalf of (someone)”.

The defense was followed by a small reception, where family, friends and colleagues helped Meina celebrate her momentous achievement and her new postdoc position at Copenhagen University.
