Chinese teachers from six European universities meet in Berlin

On June 6 and 9, 2024, Zhang Chun and Lene Sønderby Bech from our China Studies Program participated in the second transnational project meeting for the ChinGram initiative, aimed at developing an online Chinese grammar platform in six European languages. During the meeting, participants focused on various aspects of digital Chinese grammar education, including exercise typology, teacher guidelines, and proposals for classroom activities to enhance the online teaching and learning of Chinese grammar.

The event, hosted by Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, brought together educators, teachers and researchers from Palacký University Olomouc (Czech Republic), Humboldt University (Germany), University of Naples L’Orientale (Italy), Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland), and Aarhus University (Denmark). The project is supported by the Erasmus+ KA220- Cooperative Partnership grant.

Chinese New Year Celebration

2024: Year of the Dragon

On 9 February, staff from our China Studies program arranged an event with ESN Aarhus and Studenterhus Aarhus to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Students got a chance to experience plenty of Chinese New Year traditions, such as writing red couplets expressing good wishes for the coming year, and making jiaozi (Chinese dumplings) and tangyuan (a sweet dessert made with gloutinous rice flour), both of which are traditional New Year’s foods.

The students also got to practice their Chinese language skills in a fun and informal way, by singing karaoke and watching the Chinese Spring Festival Gala, which is broadcast throughout China every year for Chinese New Year.

This year is the year of the dragon. Unlike in the West, dragons in China are seen as benevolent beings who symbolize good luck and prosperity.

We want to thank our colleagues from China Studies and everyone else who participated for making it a night to remember!

China Studies participates for the 2nd year in a row

Johnni and Jonas teaching the students about 'guanxi'

BA students Johnni Friis Bovbjerg and Jonas Christensen from our China Studies program participated in ‘Sprogcamp 2024’ in Hjørring this weekend, along with external lecturer Lene Sønderby Bech.

Sprogcamp (language camp) is an event that aims to motivate Danish high school students to study foreign languages and inspire them to pursue careers where languages play a central role. Apart from introducing the students to the Chinese language, Johnni and Jonas also gave them an introduction to Chinese business culture, where ‘guanxi’ (network) is of prime importance.

Sprogcamp is co-organized by Hjørring Gymnasium/STX and HF, and Aarhus University, Aalborg University, University of Southern Denmark. This was the 2nd year in a row that our China Studies program joined this extraordinary event.

The event began with an insightful exploration of the history of Chinese calligraphy, emphasizing its deep-rooted significance in Chinese culture. Attendees got a glimpse at the intricate strokes and characters of this beautiful art.

A highlight of the day was witnessing the meticulous process of ink-making, an essential component of this art form. Participants were then encouraged to try their hand at crafting their own characters, immersing themselves in the artistic qualities of Chinese calligraphy.

At the day’s end, attendees took home their calligraphic creations, to hang up and invite good luck into their lives. We thank China Studies for a wonderful event!

Our third year China Studies students travelled to Den Gamle By in Aarhus on Wednesday, the 11th of October.

They filmed an introductory video to the old city as part of their final assignment. In Chinese, they introduced different eras of architecture and the way that people lived throughout the years in the authentic old part of Aarhus.

We look forward to seeing the final product!

Walk and Talk

A China Studies cultural exchange

On the 23rd of September, the Chinese exchange students and the Danish students of Chinese Studies joined us for a walk along the city during a beautiful autumn day.

All China Studies 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students participated and had a nice time chatting and walking together. The event was a great opportunity for our students to talk with native speakers and make new friends. At the same time, we prepared both Danish and Chinese snacks to share with everyone.

Although there was light rain in the morning, luckily the sun was shining all the way through the walk and we even saw a rainbow at the end of the day.

Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival

Last Friday, September 29, China Studies at Aarhus University brightened the evening with a celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival. This cherished Chinese festival, known also as the Moon Festival, symbolizes unity and togetherness under the full moon.

Originating over 3,000 years ago, the Mid-Autumn Festival has deep cultural roots. It honors the moon goddess and signifies a bountiful harvest. At our event, we explored the festival’s history and enjoyed homemade mooncakes, which represent completeness like the full moon itself. We also savored traditional Chinese teas.

Our attendees engaged in crafting beautiful lanterns and learned the intricate skill of paper-cutting.

We extend our gratitude to China Studies for this enrichnig event, blending education and enjoyment. It embodied the festival’s spirit – celebrating Chinese culture, bringing people together in cultural exchange.

As we bid farewell to this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, anticipate more exciting cultural events from China Studies and other programmes at the Department of Global Studies.

Chinese dumpling-making

On 4 February, students and staff from our China Studies program met up at Aarhus Kollegiet in Brabrand to make jiaozi (Chinese dumplings) in a belated celebration of Chinese New Year. The students got a hands-on lesson in Chinese culinary culture, as they learned to make dumplings from scratch – preparing the filling, making the dough, rolling it out and folding it around the filling – with the help of some of our Chinese colleagues. In the end, their hard work paid off when they got to eat their fill of delicious jiaozi with three different types of filling.

In Northern China, it is traditional to eat jiaozi on the eve of the lunar new year. There is even an old tradition of adding a coin in the filling of one of them, and whoever manages to get it will have good luck in the coming year (somewhat similar to the Danish tradition of adding a single whole almond in the risalamande on Christmas Eve).

A special thanks to Yufei Ouyang, Jiang Qiuyu and Jiayuan Zhou for arranging the event.
