Delegation trip to Ukraine

For Project PUBLISH: Children’s Books in the Russia-Ukraine War

In early April, a joint Danish-Ukrainian team of researchers kicked off a new research project, PUBLISH: Children’s Books in the Russia-Ukraine War, with a trip to Ukraine, where they visited both Kyiv and Lviv to meet with Ukranian scholars, establish networks and collect research materials.

Our Department of Global Studies was represented by Birgitte Beck Pristed and Nadiia Pavlyk, who conducted in-depth interviews with directors of some of the leading Ukrainian children’s book publishers, and brought some 30 children’s books about the war back with them.

The project came about as a result of Birgitte and Nadiia meeting and discussing their research at the Ukrainian Scholars Days, a biannual event organised by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and The Danish Young Academy. The two presented their project there last month to great interest and acclaim (in Danish).

Frederik Edsberg and Daniela Lange Andersen from our Russian Studies program have written an article about their visit to the Latvian city of Daugavpils, which is known for its large Russian diaspora.

Frederik and Daniela have been on exchange in Latvia this semester, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has meant that our BA students from Russian Studies have had to find alternative ways to complete their semester abroad, where they focus improving their Russian language skills.

Workshop:

In Defence of Europe: Pro-Ukraine activism and mobilization across Eastern Europe

On 8-9 June 2023 in King’s College London (KCL) a two-day workshop, “In Defence of Europe: Pro-Ukraine activism and mobilization across Eastern Europe”, took place. The workshop was organized by King’s College London (Adam Fagan) and the University of Belgrade (Filip Ejdus, Nemanja Džuverović), and sponsored by the European University alliance Circle-U, a network of nine universities including Aarhus University.

Scholars from different universities, i.e. Aarhus University, University of Belgrade, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, King’s College London, Masaryk University, etc. met to share their research results on civil society mobilization around the war in Ukraine across post-communist Europe, from the Baltics to the Balkans. Keynote speech by Milada Vachudova on Fighting for Freedom and Democracy: Ukraine’s Challenge to Europe shed light on what steps are awaiting Ukraine to enter the European Union and highlighted enormous bravery and heroism of the Ukrainian nation.

The results of the workshop, implemented in articles, will be submitted as a special issue to East European Politics and presented at the 2023 Belgrade Security Conference.

Article by Russian Studies BA student in Latvia

Published in The Magazine rØst (in Danish)

Frederik Edsberg from our Russian Studies program wrote an article on Latvia’s relation to its Soviet past and its neighbor, Russia.

Frederik is a BA student and is currently on exchange in Latvia. Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, our BA students from Russian Studies have had to find alternative ways to complete their semester abroad, where they focus improving their Russian language skills. Studying abroad in a former Soviet republic offers unique insights into the legacy of the Soviet Union, which the students might otherwise have been unaware of.

Conference:

Rebuilding of Ukraine - People, Ideas, Technologies and Resources

On March 28, the conference “Rebuilding of Ukraine. People, Ideas, Technologies, and Recourses” took place, organized by AUFF-Ukraine Research Fellows at the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS), with the financial support of the Carlsberg Foundation. The idea of organizing the conference appeared in the fall of 2022.

The conference was attended by both Danish and Ukrainian speakers, including Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Kingdom of Denmark Mykhailo Vydoinyk, Nobel Peace Prize 2022 Laureate Oleksandra Matviychuk, Lotte Holm, Deputy Director of the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, and others.

The conference was a hybrid event (online/offline). The purpose of the conference was to discuss the current state of the socio-economic and scientific-educational sectors in Ukraine, the vision, and plans for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, and to bring together scholars from different disciplines to establish links between scholars in Ukraine and abroad. Each panel of the conference consisted of three or four 15-minute presentations followed by a panel discussion.
